Plovdiv is home city of the greatest Bulgarian female athlete – Stefka Kostadinova (Olympic and World champion and current world record holder of high jump with 2.09). Many others famous Bulgarian athletes are born or have worked in Plovdiv’s athletics school - holder of two Olympic silver medals in discus – Maria Vergova, European 800m champion – Liliana Tomova, World indoor champion of high jump Hristina Kaltcheva, European indoor champion in pole vault – Atanas Tarev, two times European indoor sprint champion Sofka Popova ect. The Plovdiv rowing canal is an excelent facility for rowing sports and other activities. It has been a venue for many champoinships and competitions. This is the favorite place for a walk, skate, joging or just to relax at the outdoor cafes along the shore of the lake. The canal is built to international standards approved by FICA. The length of the canal is 2, 200m, width 120m and depth 3m. European Cup (First League) is the second biggest track and field event in Plovdiv sport’s history. The city hosted Third World Junior Championship in Athletics in August 1990. More than 1100 young athletes from 86 nations competed for honours in Plovdiv before 14 years at the same stadium, where the European Cup will be held. Some great athletes have begun their careers from this World Junior Championships. Among them are Wilson Kipketer, Moses Kiptanui, Richard Chelimo, Mathew Birir, Dragutin Topic, Jean Galfione, Nick Hysong, Ivan Pedroso, Karsten Kobs, Iliia Markov, Jefferson Perez, Detaratu Tulu, Iva Prandzeva and many others. Bulgaria had two champions – Iva Prandzeva (long jump) and Ilian Iliev (discus).
