Hissarya History
&
About Hissarya

Hissarya (364 BC), this is an outdoor museum say the knowledged people. It is located 42 km. north of Plovdiv city where the slopes of Sredna Gora mountain merge with the Tracian valey and 160 km east of Sofia. Its glory comes exclusively from its hot mineral springs. In the area of the mineral springs are found remains from ancient times (late neolith). The small settlement of the Thracian tribe called Besi gradually became famous with its magic sanative springs. The Romans built a great number of buildings and next to the baths there was an entire city. The city was named "Auguste". Latter the Emperor Dioklestian settled here becauise the mineral sanatative springs gave the name if the settlement Dioklestianopolis.

The Roman Emperor Septemij Sever had been coming for treatments in Hissar. The formed settlement from the Romans has been the object of attacks from Barbarians, because of that it became necessary to be raised a bulwark. Remains from that bulwark exist and can still be seen at the present time in the central area of the city. The fortress has been accessible though four gates. Most likely the southern gate, which is the tallest one, has been the official entry. It is damaged through the ages, but its skeleton remains. From the recent excavations were found a main street, which connect the north and the southern gate. The ancient city built in the town-planing rulles of the Romans had a large and staight streets, decorated with statues of gods and goddess, marble baths, with beautiful palaces and villas of Roman aristocrats. The sewage, water pipes and bath are adorned with splendid mosaics. Near by was found another large bath. Its foundation remains in good condition, with marble tubes, heating installation and other well-formed architectural rooms. Also found are two basilica and huge villas with many sections and rooms, owned probably by Roman leader, which according to the specialists was built in the third or fourth century. The archeologists say there are many yet to be seen from the ancient Auguste. The settlement of today’s city of Hissarya was captured by the Turks in 1363, and again was burned down. Restored in the 16 century, it took today’s name. The city of Hissarya became an modern spa resort with up to date facilities and services for its visitors. The area of Hissarya is never been an industrial area that makes it an ecologically clean resort with clean air and waters. Hissarya resort has a temperate continental climate.
There are 20 mineral springs and temperature of the water between 24°C and 49°C, slightly mineralized, hypo- and hyper-thermal, with a predominance of hydrocarbonic, sodium, sulp-hate and fluorine ions with a high alkaline reaction (pH 8.3 to 9.02).
